Nothing motivates Democrats more than a popular governor, except a popular Republican governor who has his way with Democrats to the delight of voters. Welcome to the world of New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu.
Some things never change. Democrats have but two or three drums they repeatedly beat. One of those is that any conservative governor must have unsavory ties to corporate donors, lobbyists, and dark special interest groups.
There you have it, in a nutshell. New Hampshire Democrats are laying the groundwork for a concerted effort to unseat Chris Sununu as Governor, replacing him with a liberal puritan, one without loyalties to anyone. A favorite attack is the age-old GOP love for he 1% at the expense of the 99%.
Chris Sununu is for sale to the highest bidder, and it’s clear that he’s willing to sell out Granite Staters and their priorities to please his party, his special interests, his corporate donors, and the top 1 percent…Sununu is for sale…” – Holly Shulman, NH Dem Party
From my vantage point, it appears Sununu is no friend of popular liberal themes, such as government for the sake of government, biggest is the best, large is good, temperance is bad. In fact, Chris Sununu has been fending off liberal attempts to expand government and spending. The Democrats control the NH legislature, and we know what that can mean for fiscally conservative governor…remember Governor Scott Walker (R-WI)?
The Democrat hate Sununu campaign is triggered, in part, by Sununu’s veto pen. He’s nixed legislation 50 times in 2019 alone, reportedly a record. Nothing drives liberals insane more than cutting them off at the trough. Sununu is denying them the candy store, and they are infuriated. Therefore, the opposition has ordered yard signs that state, “Sununu, Bought and Paid For.” It’s a war of hate, a war of lies, and a war that, in the end, takes no prisoners.
Mind you, I don’t think Governor Sununu is a Ted Cruz (R-TX) conservative, but he’s far enough to the right to know liberal government extremism when he sees it. Happily, Chris is his own man, and no one’s clone.
While the NH Democrats launch their acidic hate campaign, Sununu continues to wrack-up wins for the state.
Chris is liked. He enjoys a 65% approval rating and is ranked in the top 5 most liked governors in America…not bad, I’d say.
On August 9, 2019, the Governor’s website listed the following vetoes, captioned “Please see below for a list of six bills that Governor Chris Sununu vetoed today:”
- HB 109, requiring background checks for commercial firearms sales.
- HB514, imposing a waiting period between the purchase and delivery of a firearm.
- HB 564, relative to possession of firearms on school property.
- HB 706, establishing an independent redistricting commission.
- SB 2, relative to funding for job training programs in the department of business and economic affairs.
- SB 10, relative to the state minimum hourly rate.
On June 25, 2019, the Governor vetoed eight bills, and on July 10, 2019, he vetoed 10 more bills.
Sununu vetoed the state budget, but not without declaring the motivation for his action:
This afternoon, I vetoed the Legislature’s proposed state budget. With a $260 million surplus, it just doesn’t make sense to increase taxes by 12.5%. This budget creates nearly a $100 million deficit for the next Legislature – that’s just not responsible management. pic.twitter.com/W6DFcuXMKb

In the end, the government is about the peoples’ money, and good governance is about discipline, stewardship and serving the best financial interest of one’s constituents.
Chris Sununu’s administration is running a reported $260 million surplus. He has successfully reduced budgeted spending. Now he’s a hated and hunted man. Nothing drives a wild-eyed progressive into insanity faster than budget surpluses. When a liberal sees money, their immediate impulse is to spend it all…then ask for more…then tax the people for more.
Governor Chris Sununu is a veto machine, under attack by the left, but a principled man who is driven by his innate sense of government restraint.
